craniosacral therapy

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy, like all complementary and alternative therapy, takes a holistic and integrated approach to our body; to illness, disease, physical and psychological pain and difficulty.

Craniosacral Therapy can reconnect us to our bodies, helping us find balance and ground again. It can support us at times of stress and difficulty or when we are recovering from illness or injury by activating our bodies inherent healing capabilities which can get overridden when we are unwell, in pain, stressed and under resourced.

The word Craniosacral refers to the relationship of the cranium or skull through the spinal column to the sacrum at the base of the spine. This central body system contains the brain, central nervous system and cerebrospinal fluid. From these midline structures the practitioner is listening and attuning to what is happening throughout the body.

Through light gentle hands-on contact, the therapist is able to feel subtle movements and rhythms of the fluids and tissues in our bodies. These are different to our breathing and heartbeat, and are like the slow deeper tidal motion underneath the choppy waters above. This subtle way of listening can help us to connect to the presence of health in the system as well as where the body is holding patterns of tension, contraction and restriction.

Craniosacral Therapy works to help the body to soften and release these restrictive patterns allowing vitality and energy to return to the whole body. It can also be particularly useful in supporting the central nervous system to rest out of its busy activated state. Most of us struggle with finding this healthy rest state in day-to-day life and certainly when under stress or after an illness or injury and it is crucial for healing and ongoing health.

A craniosacral session.

During an initial session we will first talk about your health concerns, your health history and your reasons for seeking Craniosacral therapy treatment. In subsequent sessions there will always be some time for checking in at the beginning together and space to ask any questions or offer any feedback at the end.

It is advisable to wear clothing you are comfortable to lie down on a couch in, that allows your body to relax during a session. Light hands-on contact with your body will be made that usually starts at the feet. I will move to make contact and hold other areas of the body depending on what is needed but this often will include your head and spine whilst you are lying on your back. I may also ask you to lie on your side if that is comfortable.

Sessions can feel different for everyone. During a treatment you may feel sensations such as heat, cold, motion, tingling and pulsing.

Afterwards you might feel tired, relaxed or rested as if you’ve had a good sleep. Some people feel energised with a sense of greater freedom and movement and others describe feeling as if something has been organised and realigned or a feeling of being more settled. Both emotional and physical changes can occur. As it supports our overall health, it can affect our body in both unexpected ways as well as in ways we might hope for.

Craniosacral therapy is a non-manipulative gentle hands-on therapy that is suitable for everyone.
